Why is NOLS asking for money to enhance services? Why not ask for just enough to get by?
The NOLS business plan responds to two major complaints heard county-wide: more convenient hours (Saturday hours in Forks, for example, and standard morning and evening hours in Sequim and Port Angeles), and more new books and other materials at all locations. If the Library isn’t open when you need it, and if it doesn’t have what you want, you’re going to stop using it, support will drop off, and something very precious to our democracy will be lost. So meeting local needs is a primary goal of the plan. And equally importantly, under the plan, these service levels will be fiscally sustainable for at least 10 years. It’s expensive and time-consuming to put a proposition on the ballot. If NOLS asked for less of an increase, another ballot measure would be needed in another 2-3 years.
