Why is NaCl given for respiratory acidosis or any other acid-base imbalances?
It’s usually only given when cardiac function is not impaired because of it AND when kidney function is adequate. Essentially, it allows the kidneys to take care of the problem by excreting either HCl or NH4Cl. Thus, the Cl is more important than the Na. Also, NaCl is often given whenever the patient needs fluids. By giving the Cl needed to help get rid of excess acids AND by giving fluids, it both helps any dehydration and give the kidneys plenty of fluids to filter out the excess acids.
