Why is my Zip disk making a continuous clicking sound and not appearing on the Mac Desktop?
The clicking sound is NOT a good sign. This has happened several times in the past and I’ve had minimal luck recovering files from a disk exhibiting this behavior. Compared to other media types over the years, I feel that Zip disks have had a much higher failure rate. This is often referred to as the “Click of Death” and is the main reason we stress that you never have only one copy of your files at any given time or you risk losing valuable work and wasting many hours of your time. I’ve often seen this clicking occurring when students use a PC formated disk as their primary Mac working disk. A PC formatted disk, though mountable on the Mac, should NEVER be used as a working disk. It should only be used to quickly transfer a file from Mac to PC or vice-versa at the desktop level. Never work in an application and save files from the application to the PC disk.
