Why is my student earning a “B” or “C” in English 3H when he/she always earned “A” grades in previous English classes?
It is typical that students an honors level English class find it more demanding than they are accustomed to. They may take some time to adjust not only to the challenges of junior year in high school in in college preparatory classes but also honors and AP level courses, which are much more rigorous. Most likely your student is very bright and has not needed to practice the kind of study skills required to succeed in this type of learning environment. These study skills include organizational skills (particularly the notebook), time management skills, note taking, test preparation, etc. Active reading is a must; simply reading the literary pieces without using active reading strategies is not enough (see next question on active reading). Time spent on revising and editing their writing is also mandatory to earn high grades. Also, in the case of written work, most typically in English 3H students fail to follow directions or meet expectations of the assignment. I suggest you ask to see
