Hair can get dried out from a number of different practices. The biggest cause of hair drying out and hence becoming tangled is over blow-drying or using the straightening or curling iron too often. Coloring the hair is also a big culprit. If your hair is over-processed, meaning that it is colored over and over the same areas again, it will most definitely become dried out and tangly. Chlorine, improper brushing or combing, certain shampoos and styling products and an improper diet also cause hair to dry out. The structure of the hair is such that it is like scales on a fish that lay on top of each-other in a downward way. When we practice some of the stuff already mentioned, we lift the cuticle, (the scales), and they become permanently lifted until cut off or grown out. When the cuticle is lifted, it acts like tiny barbs getting caught up in each-other causing tangling.
