Either way, if your fishes’ color appear dull, it might be due to poor water conditions. You mentioned cloudy water. This could be a bacterial bloom in your tank, which is normal in some circumstances, but sometimes it could be due to dirty gravel or excess food trapped in your decor or substrate that has begun to rot. If you don’t already have one, purchase a gravel-vac from your local pet store and vaccuum your substrate while performing your normal water-change routine. Divide your tank into 4 “quadrants”, and each week you should vaccuum only one of these quadrants. Pick up excess food, feces, and decaying plant matter (if you have live plants).
