Why is my computer freezing and popups if I have norton anti-virus software installed on my computer?

I have had Norton antivirus software on my computer for around 2 years and all of a suddent this week my computer has been getting popups and freezing every so often. Could this have anything to do with not defragmenting my computer and freeing up disk space and using my disk cleanup and defragmenting? I haven't done it on my computer since I go it and I have had it for about 2-3 years. I am hoping defrag and disc cleanup will solve the problem. Does anyone know?
