Bob Mathias, who won Olympic decathlon gold in 1948 and 1952, and Rafer Johnson, who won in 1960, both went on to additional fame in motion pictures and politics. Campbell, who was the silver medalist behind Mathias in ’52 and then upset Johnson to win gold in 1956, is a far more neglected figure – even though he may have been a better and more versatile athlete.
