Why is milk so bad for dogs and cats?

Milk isn’t that bad for cats and dogs. Except for those animals, like humans, who can’t digest the lactose in milk and end up with diarrhoea. I normally tell my clients, if the animal has no signs of stomach upset, they can feed milk every so often as a treat.
