Why is mental illness automatically considered a permanent disability if 70 percent of people recover fully?
Which mental illness are you referring to? Because they’re not all the same, and not all have a 70 percent recovery rate. Some are lifelong and disabling, preventing the person from adequately taking care of themselves. Many are not. Some only come back if the person stops taking medication. Those cases where they can’t work and take care of themselves can be put on disability; most people with a mental illness are not on permanent disability.
