King was an exceptionally gifted, fascinating, and courageous individual who challenged authority and took such controversial stands as opposing American intervention in Vietnam and mobilizing the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968. He was also a leader best understood in the context of African-American history and as the product of the social movements that he has come to symbolize.
