Why is Marchs First Fridays event important for the UM Gallery?
March 6 will be the grand opening of our gallery. We’ll be flying in 2Mex, an underground hip-hop artist from LA, to play a free show on the front porch. There are three different galleries in the house. (For March’s First Fridays and Art Detour,) one of the galleries will feature Nobody, who specializes in fine art. The second gallery will feature graffiti art from Dumperfoo, and the third gallery will be a collection of primarily graffiti art and photography from a number of local artists. There will be local DJs like Pickster One playing all weekend, and we’re selling vendor space, too. There will be low-rider car vendors and local T-shirt companies. We want to tie in local small businesses. How will UM be different from other galleries in Art Detour? The style of music and artwork is going to be quite different, just judging on past (years’) galleries and exhibits. These artists are lesser known but are making noise in the underground scene.
