Its important because it is a sign of sex discrimination, which is illegal as well as being morally wrong. Usually men and women doing the same job get the same pay, but wage discrimination can still exist indirectly. For example, women may be less able to work overtime or longer hours because they are more likely to have family commitments. As well as the direct effect of less overtime pay, this can also impact performance related pay, pay rises and promotions. Also men and women doing different, but “equal” jobs have often been paid differently, especially where the jobs are traditionally a man’s job or a woman’s job. For example, labouring is a manual, unskilled job typically done by a man, and cleaning is a manual unskilled job typically done by a woman.
