Why is Llord of the Flies rated R?

When the movie was first released in 1963 it was given an X certificate in Britain, which meant that only adults over the age of 18 could go to see it (pretty much the same as the USA R rating). The irony of this was that every actor in the movie was too young to go and watch their own performance at the cinema. The reason it was given this rating was that, at the time, the theme of savagery and violence was considered far too disturbing for a younger audience. There are also two murders and some incidental nudity in the movie, which the censor saw as further reasons for rating it as they did.
