Why is lighter skin color more desirable in certain cultures (like India) and in the media?
White or fair skin is what is usually considered to be the ideal of beauty. So basically with people of color the closer you are to white the better especially for women. You will notice that many times you will see dark men with women who have very light skin because those women are considered the most beautiful. People with lighter skin are perceived to be more sophisticated and more easily able to fit into “white society”. It’s not fair but that’s how it is and will continue to be. I’m black and I have light skin but have friends and family who are dark that get treated badly for their skin tone by people just as dark. It’s like the pot calling the kettle black literally. It’s really nothing you can do about it when you’re told generation after generation lighter is better.
