Why is legalizing marijuana a big deal anyway?
Your facts are all messed up. Its debated upon because technically its not a drug. For a drug you have to alter it so that it becomes dangerous. You don’t have to alter marijuana. Its a plant and if you just happen to light it on fire it has some beneficial effects. 🙂 But it does alter your way of thinking. Its pretty much identical to alcohol, except it doesn’t damage your liver and you inhale it. Cigarettes are way more damaging to your health because of the thousands of chemicals. Marijuana only has a couple of hundred and those are all natural. The most dangerous thing about marijuana is that since you inhale the smoke it can damage your lungs.
I’m not a pot head, but I do think it should be legal. A million physicians will tell you that it’s no more harmful than tobacco or alcohol, and less addictive than either. A million law enforcement officials will tell you that they would have much more time to chase down murderers and rapists if weed was legal. A million politicians will tell you that it would be a heck of a lot easier to give funding to law enforcement, schools, infrastructure, etc. if they could tax pot instead of spending futile billions on trying to make it go away. A million historians would tell you that the only reason it was illegal in the first place was because Hearst and his pulpwood lobby fought to make it so along with hemp so he could have a virtual monopoly on paper production and hemp didn’t have an equivalent lobby. I don’t smoke anything, never have and never will, but the reasons for legalization are abundant, compelling and practical. So yes, it’s a very big deal. People will find ways to get high
We are all taught that doing drugs is bad for you, and I agree that that is true but the amount of information on the actual effects of Marijuana is limited and varies from source to source. For example, some studies show that after long term use of Marijuana, a person may become clinically depressed; some other sources mention no such thing. There are many studies such as that and we still don’t have the best information on it, that’s the only reason I cannot take it ALL as fact. I have never smoked marijuana ever (I have never done any drugs at all as a matter of fact) but my friends have. I have the same mind set as you, when someone argues to legalize marijuana I automatically thing “heh, yea you just want to smoke it freely” even though that may not always be the case. The government knows that younger people smoke pot a good amount of the time, along with a good bit of older people but by legalizing marijuana it could tamper with the balance that we currently have. For instance,
