Why is learning about Floridass Diverse Hispanic Heritage and Culture important?

I find I always like to know a bit about the place where I am living–its history, its population, its culture and viewpoints, etc. Florida has a large Latino population, which has had a tremendous impact on its development–therefore, to learn more about the culture, is to understand more about the state. When diversity curriculums/programs were first introduced, they were a breath of fresh air–for example, Latinos could feel happy that their contributions were being recognized, and Americans could learn more (which is usually a good thing). Recently, certain politicos have convinced people that to submit to any sort of diversity/cultural learning at all is “politically correct” and subversive to American culture. I think that sort of thinking is ridiculous and sad. Surely many of these programs can be improved, but to close our minds to new information and learning altogether is not the answer.
