Why is Jupiter a Jovian planet?
Jupiter was a Roman god. The name stems from the Latin Iuppiter, a compound derived from archaic Latin Iovis and pater. Jove is a less common English formation based on Iov. In other words, a mix-up on the pronounciation by the Old English people that stayed with us. Jovian would mean ‘under the influence of Jupiter’ probably in terms of the god Jupiter and not the planet.
