Why is John Dalton considered the father of modern atomic theory?
John Dalton FRS (6 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) was an English chemist, meteorologist and physicist. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory, and his research into colour blindness (sometimes referred to as Daltonism, in his honour). In 1800 he became a secretary of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, and in the following year he orally presented an important series of papers, entitled “Experimental Essays” on the constitution of mixed gases; on the pressure of steam and other vapours at different temperatures, both in a vacuum and in air; on evaporation; and on the thermal expansion of gases. These four essays were published in the Memoirs of the Lit & Phil in 1802. Dalton, John (1766-1844) English meteorologist who switched to chemistry when he saw the applications for chemistry of his ideas about the atmosphere. He proposed the Atomic Theory in 1803 which stated that (1) all matter was composed of small indivisible particles termed atoms, (2) atoms of a given element possess unique characteristics and weight, and (3) three types of atoms exist: simple (elements), compound (simple molecules), and complex (complex molecules). Dalton’s theory was presented in New System of Chemical Philosophy (1808-1827). This work identified chemical elements as a specific type of atom, therefore rejecting Newton’s theory of chemical affinities. Instead, Dalton inferred proportions of elements in compounds by taking ratios of the weights of reactants, setting the atomic weight Eric Weisstein’s World of Physics of hydrogen to be identically one. In 1802, John Dalton first began to craft his atomic theory. He theorized the existence of elements, atoms and compounds, and many of the basic theories concerning them. All modern discussions of chemistry or particle physics are built upon his original work. Because he created the underpinnings of modern atomic theory, he is considered to be the father of it. Indeed, one atomic mass unit is commonly called a “dalton” in his honor.
