I’d have to question the validity of your supposition. Garfield and McKinley aren’t on many people’s lists of good presidents, but they were assassinated too. (In fairness to Garfield, he didn’t really live long enough as president to establish a reputation.) You might still claim that great or renowned presidents are more likely to be assassinated (or be targets of assassination attempts). And it can be justified on the basis that “great” presidents are more likely to do more and/or change more (and get more things done); the more you get done and the more changes you make, the more likely that you will do something that makes some other people very, very upset.
