Why is it that people buy appliances and gadgets then used it once in a blue moon?

I reckon that the marketing logic goes, not enough people will want to allocate the storage space and spend the money for an appliance that just does x, so we’ll make it do y and z (sort of) too – and then we can charge a bit more! Last week my wife and I took a leap in the dark. We did something that many people dream of and many more probably think is daft or even dangerous: we sold our house and bought 10 acres of woodland in the West Country, which we are hoping to run as a communal shelter for people facing personal crises. Pilsdon welcomes all-comers: returning soldiers, the bereaved, tearaway teenagers, recovering alcoholics or drug addicts, single parents, those facing marital or mental breakdown, recently released prisoners with nowhere to go, hard-up pensioners, refugees, wayfarers and so on. This may sound like an explosive cocktail, but if you went there you’d be astonished by the beauty and serenity of the place and its surprising cheerfulness.
