Why is it that more Jewish population perished in Poland rather than Germany?
Because many Jewish people had already fled Germany before the war and were refugees in Poland, thus boosting the already significant numbers there. This is partly why the death camps were mainly situated in Poland. The persecution of the Jews had started well before the war in Germany – with the introduction of the Nuremberg Race Laws – those who could manage it (eg Albert Einstein) went to America, those who could not would eventually fall into the hands of the Nazis as the Reich expanded – or were handed over by sympathetic governments sucha as happened in Hungary. Your figures are perhaps a bit low – Poland’s victims are estimated as 3m, Germany (inc Austria) as about 210.000 (out of 240,000). In each case the death toll represents about 90% of the immediate prewar Jewish population for each of the countries.
