Communism, in its purity, is a naive idea that is doomed to failure from its inception. The theory goes that the people own the land as a “community,” with no private ownership of property whatsoever. This is supposedly to insure equality, regardless of inevitable inherent inequalities. The problem arises–and this is the reason why it never works–when this idea is implemented, someone has to be in charge to “regulate” the equality. The regulator of equality is, by definition, unequal to those whom he is regulating, and it therefore sets up an inevitable dictatorship. So true communism can never work, as it is an oxymoron in and of itself. China’s communism has “worked” over the past 50 years because of its shrewd incorporation of capitalistic economic prinicples, which have enabled its survival in international trade. Communism puts control back into the hands of the worker, but what happened after the Russian revolution is radical leaders sought power for themselves, so they implemented a different kind of communism where the government owned all the businesses. When the government was given all the power to control the worker, they started implementing programs like national quota’s. The quota systems ruined the country, because sure you had 100,000 televisions…but none of them worked. They put quantity over quality. In a moderately socialist state the means of production lie in the hands of the workers. For example, labor unions. Labor unions make it so that the workers must be treated fairly and receive a fair wage for their work. If those demands are met, business goes on and prospers. Happy workers mean happy businesses.
