Why is it so important to increase stream flows in the White River between February and April?
These months are important because nutrients from human and farm activities that enter the river upstream often cause algae to “bloom” in the White River, especially in the winter when the water is clear. After an algae bloom, pH levels in the river water can become too basic and harm fish. Keeping flows at higher levels between February and April will help dilute the nutrients, thereby improving water quality. The increase in flows will also expand fish habitat and aid fish migration.
