Why is it necessary to take a different approach to the assessment of safety and environmental issues?
Because the ALARP principle is not easy to practically apply in the environmental context. There are normally too many variables relating to the different types of environmental issues and the particular context in which these may potentially occur. This variability has an impact upon both tolerability and acceptability arguments. This does not mean that assessments cannot be carried out together – just that the approach to undertaking these assessments may need to be different. POEMS and POSMS management procedures provide guidance upon this.
