Why is it more expensive to insure a red car?

Someone is pulling your leg, Ellen. You are not the first one to ask this question, though, it is a common misconception. It is not more expensive to insure a red car. Insurance companies do not ask for the color of the car. This is a question on your registration. Insurance is based on a lot of factors. In Canada your vehicle is regarded by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and this establishes a rate group under the CLEAR rating system. The Collision and Upset portion of your policy premium is one rate group. The Comprehensive or Specified Perils (fire, theft, etc.) is another rate group. These rate groups are color blind. It is noted though, that the police seem to pay a bit more attention to yellow or red cars. They just catch the eye. So if you are not driving carefully you might be more prone to get a ticket. Good luck and enjoy that red car!
