Because there may be yet some undiscovered plant there that you can smoke that will make you feel really, really good that causes absolutely no bodily damage or cancer so it will not be outlawed by the government. Also many cures for many diseases could be discovered deep in the rainforests when they identify so new plant or herb they could use to make medicine to save millions of people. If we chop it all down these plants will perish. Plus massive rainforests keep the planet cooler the world over and much cooler summers is a good thing where most Americans live. Plants absorb heat like a sponge. Ever notice when you walk on a summer night wooded areas seem cooler? The ground soaks it in and gives off heat much slower than concrete and pavement.
