Why is it impoetant to define tourism?
Tourism: the commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest. (Oxford Dictionary) In my view, it is important to define it because tourism can be in itself a defining experience. The encounter of various cultures and how they interact… Because tourism is usually organized through the scope of economics and the idea of profitability, it is important to have in place a system of checks and accountability. Many cultures will often adapt and change their ways in order to attract more tourists. But in the process, they might lose an important part of their heritage. Unfortunately, there are many places that still today thrive on sex tourism (ie, Thailand, The Phillipines…). It would be great if the government would have the courage to step in and stop that kind of trade… For this reason alone, to define the ethics of tourism is particularly important.
