Why is it commonly believed by religious folk that morality is impossible without God?

I’m not sure what you mean by “religious folk”. If you’re referring to Christians, I don’t think that’s true per se. I’m Christian and have known many good people who are atheists. I don’t think of them as immoral. I think they lack spiritual vision and discernment. They require proof before receiving new ideas. But just because you cannot see something does not mean it doesn’t truly exist. The moral fabric of our society has been deteriorating for a long time. Family life is very corrupt. Infidelity and divorce are common. And abortion is a prevailing practice. The immoral forces that are pervading our culture today are the direct result of social engineering by the ruling elite aristocracy. Qualities like morality, honesty and personal responsibility are not even remotely as important to people today as they were say 100 years ago.
