Why is it called the Central Suriname Nature Reserve or CSNR?
The first name proposed for the new Reserve was Coppename Nature Reserve, as it would be effectively protecting the complete upper reaches of the Coppename River. However, with the knowledge in mind that this would be a nature reserve of global significance and most likely would become a UNESCO world heritage site, Mr. J. Wijdenbosch, the President of the time, proposed that the name Suriname would be included in the name, providing thus a good sense of its geographic location in the world and also within Suriname. Hence, the name Central Suriname Nature Reserve, abbreviated as CSNR.
