“The Maple Leafs say that the name was chosen in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment from World War I.” Since they are named after a group and not a thing (Maple Leaf), the plural of their name is Maple Leafs. Personally, I think they should rename the team to “The Team That Will Never Win The Stanley Cup” and then they could avoid grammar problems altogether.
