Why is IPv6 needed?
The Internet is running out of IPv4 addresses. Since we can’t simply “make” more IPv4 addresses, the Internet as a whole has to change to a new numbering method, known as IPv6. In early 2011 the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) exhausted the global IPv4 free pool and starting in 2011 Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) will begin to see their IPv4 free pools deplete. The volume of devices that are Internet-enabled is growing rapidly. Given this growth, it is important that there are adequate IP address resources available to ensure all of the same can maximize their potential and connect to the Internet. IPv4 will not be able to satisfy these needs, which is why the Internet community is adopting IPv6.
