Why is Health Smarts only for PPO Plan participants?
SISC offers our members the choice of medical coverage under a health maintenance organization (HMO) or preferred provider organization (PPO). HMOs have more typically been focused on keeping their members healthy, and in helping them improve their health. Participants in SISC HMOs already have health and wellness assessments and health improvement programs available to them directly through their HMOs. The traditional focus of PPOs has been on providing coverage for medical care, including prevention. However, until recently there has been less emphasis on efforts aimed at helping participants improve their health to avoid preventable medical conditions. Programs such as Health Smarts represent a new focus on health and prevention for SISCs PPO participants.
