Why is having the discipline to practice so critical?
Perfection does not come naturally, at least in the training years. That rarely happens, so it usually requires hours and hours of practice to get to where you want to be. How long does it take to master a piece of music? With something like a piece that we play in orchestra, like in symphony, it can be as little as a month. But with something like a solo piece with the bass, it can be an entire year. I’d say it would take a year to study a solo, start to finish, and be able to perform it well. What has hindered your self-discipline throughout your study? While I have always done a lot of other things, it’s different than playing a bass in high school where you can go to other classes or play sports after you practice. But at a level like studying it as an undergraduate, it’s all music all the time. That was the hardest thing to adjust to. What is the biggest struggle a classical musician faces today? Probably finding ample opportunities to make a living strictly out of just playing. A
