Hannibal Barca is important because he was one of the greatest generals of all time. He is remembered for his actions in the Second Punic War. Hating Rome, and recognising that Rome posed a threat to his native Carthage, Hannibal set out to destroy Rome in 218 BCE. Marching from what today is Spain, he took his army and crossed the Italian Alps, including war elephants, completely suprising the Romans. Over the next 15 years, Hannibal proceeded to make himself the most feared man in Rome. Though he had lost much of his army coming over the Alps, the hardened troops he had left repeatedly defeated the Roman armies sent after him.
