Why is George Mallory not accepted as the first man to reach the summit of Everest?
For me Mallory was the first to reach the summit of Mt.Everest – not only that, he did it (in his final possible year) without oxygen and wearing hobnailed boots and carrying a long polled iceaxe, which was the style of his times. His body was found about a quarter of a mile from the summit where he had fallen, by some American climbers a few years ago (saw it on TV). Mallory (a pipe smoker) had a box of English SwanVestas matches in his pocket – think they said his coat (tweed) had 16 layers of silk inside it to keep him warm. Body of Mallory found on Mt.
