Why is Friday the 13th supposed to be unlucky?
Thirteen is considered unlucky for a number of reasons, mostly because of its placement after the number 12. There are 12 months of the year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel, and 12 apostles of Jesus. Witches were believed to gather in groups of 12, so if there were 13 the last one was the devil. There were 13 people at the last supper. Among Christians, three events were supposed to have happened on Friday making it unlucky: 1. Jesus was crucified. 2. Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit. 3. Abel was slain by Cain on Friday the 13th. However, the true association, according to Time magazine, of bad luck with Friday the 13th did not come until the 20th century: “The number’s association with Friday, however, didn’t take hold until the 20th century. The superstition associated with Friday the 13th can be traced back to Biblical times. Jesus was the 13th person to his 12 apostles which indicated that someone was going to die. It is also said that Jesus was crucified, that Adam and Eve partook in the forbidden fruit, and Cain slayed Abel.
