Why is FIPS 140-2 validation important for security and encryption products?
Today, hundreds of companies create technologies that they market and sell as “security” products. Unfortunately, history has shown that a great many of these products are not in fact secure. Some technologies have fundamental design problems that make it easy to break into the product, while some companies even make false marketing claims about the security technology inside their products. The FIPS 140-2 validation process gives government and commercial customers an objective assessment that they can use to reliably qualify the security of products, and organizations should not purchase encryption products that have not been FIPS 140-2 validated.
