Why is female body hair looked down……..?
There is a lot of feminist theory upon this; basically it’s considered to be a culturally conditioned prescription used as a way for a patriarchal society to control the female body. The cultural conditioning is part of what leads women to think this is a choice, but really it’s not a choice at all; since walking around with hairy pits and legs is considered “deviant” or alternative and women who do are necessarily judged as being butch or whatever. Since unnatural and unrealistic standards of beauty are set up and constantly reinforced ie. through normative images in the media it has serious long term effects on the self-esteem of women, it seems normal for women to be incredibly beautiful and hence the average woman considers herself to be less attractive (there are endless studies which show that girls self esteem steadily decreases from childhood to adulthood while mens remains steady). The general social emphasis upon the ornamental social function women are supposed to play; ie.
