The importance of leadership in avoiding eating disorders is that girls are growing up in a culture where they can’t be leaders unless they look like a movie star and a pretty skinny one at that. It’s a confusing message to girls that says basically unless you look perfect we won’t recognize your intelligence or your passion and we won’t acknowledge your authority. We want girls to feel confident about “throwing their weight around in the world.” Just at the time when women were asking for more power in the world in the ’60s with feminism, in comes Twiggy as the ideal image. It’s the most profoundly disrespectful image of adult women’s beauty imaginable, because it’s not an adult woman’s body.
