Why is fall the best time to fertilize?
For most lawns, you want to fertilize once in late August and once in October. We would consider these the two fall fertilizer applications. The reason that fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn is that when you feed your lawn in the fall, the nutrients are changed into carbohydrates which grass plants push into their root system. So, instead of putting the energy into blade growth, you put energy into the root system which is stored for the following spring & summer. In the fall as your grass plants begin to store carbohydrates in the root system, it pushes root development to accommodate the incoming carbohydrates. This process of an expanding root system allows the plant to send new rhizomes which help thicken the lawn. Also, it will push roots deeper into the soil profile which is extremely beneficial to a healthy lawn. So, in summary, fall fertilizing thickens your lawn, expands the root system horizontally & vertically deep without causing a lot of blade growth so you get
