Why is Fairbanks, Alaska, a good place to visit to see the Northern Lights in the winter?”
Unlike Anchorage, Fairbanks doesn’t have as much light, ambient and otherwise, hence the lights are easier to view. You can certainly see them even from Anchorage, but the darker it is, the more intense the colors are and the better the movement can be viewed. Several places, such as Chena Hot Springs, cater to Northern Lights seeking tourists there, too, making it easier to get out of the city and into darker areas, but areas that have shelter and can be accessed with relative ease. It certainly makes the viewing easier if, spectacular as the aurora might be, you can take refuge inside a heated yurt or shelter of some sort briefly as needed. As a result of these characteristics, Fairbanks is a good place to visit if you’re anxious to see the dance of the Lights!
