Why is EPIRB called L band?
It wasn’t called “L band” until the future of the Inmarsat EPIRB L Band became a question of long-term viability. Since then, the “L-band” came to stand for the original Inmarsat 1.6 GHz EPIRB system that has now been completly phased out of service. The current standard is the 406 EPIRB. Both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Coast Guard have certified this device. This is because FCC regulations only address the transmitter function of the EPIRB while the operational requirements are certified by the Coast Guard.
