Why is DVD+RW functionality limited on the Sony Dual-RW recorder?
As explained above, there are already two different recording modes for DVD-RW. The user has to learn the differences between creating a non-compatible and a compatible recording, and the limitations that apply to the latter one. In order to prevent users from learning the possibilities of a third recording method when recording onto a DVD+RW disc, Sony decided to strip the functionality normally offered by the DVD+RW format, to make it look more like the DVD-RW “video” mode. The reason for this is simple: It is not possible to add the DVD+RW functionality and flexibility to DVD-RW, however it is possible to leave out the specific added functionality normally available from the DVD+RW part of the machine. This results in a non-compatible but flexible “VR mode” on DVD-RW discs, and in universal behaviour when recording DVD-Video compatible content onto either DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs.
