Why is duct sealing important?
Leaky ductwork is one of the most common problems found in houses. Our tests have shown that leaky ducts can lose as much as 70% of the air you pay to heat or cool. Technicians have found ducts completely disconnected so that most of the air is escaping. Because the air in the ducts is under pressure, a one square inch hole in ductwork loses as much air as a 20 square inch hole in the wall would. Average losses are about 30% and can be reduced to very low levels by proper testing and sealing. While the whole house needs about three air exchanges an hour for a “healthy house,” the ductwork should have as little leakage as possible. Leakage is not only expensive, but can prevent the heating and cooling system from delivering the comfort it should. Worse yet, duct leaks could be creating air quality problems that could affect the family’s health. Duct testing can determine how much the house is leaking and pinpoint where the leaks are so the technician can seal them.
