Why is drinking whiskey alone more dignified than drinking gin alone?
I could be a question of cost. Traditionally, whiskey, especially the better stuff, had to be aged and therefore the cost of production and subsequently the drink was higher. Gin on the other hand was cheaper and during the prohibition era could be made at home, ‘bathtub gin’, and typically tasted bad. So if you were drinking it, it certainly wasn’t for the taste. Socially dignified was an appellation that was more often applied to people with money. This could be the source of the distinction.
