Why is Doom 64 so dark?”/”Why do people say its too dark when it isn ?
Every once in a while I see the following conversation (more or less) pop up between various game players in some corner of cyberspace: “I like Doom 64, but the screen is way too dark.” “So adjust the brightness option in the game.” “I already did that. It’s still way too dark.” “Then turn up the brightness control on your TV.” “I did that too; It’s still too dark.” Sometimes the discussion goes further: “Then get a new TV.” And about half the time, the response is: “It IS a new TV. Now what?” Unfortunately it is ultimately the TV that determines whether or not Doom 64 can be made bright enough. In my own experience, I’ve played Doom 64 on two different 27-inch Sony Trinitron TVs. Both TVs display regular television pictures just fine. But on one TV, Doom 64 is plenty bright enough; On the other, it’s very dark… Even with the game’s brightness control and the TV’s brightness control both at maximum, it’s still difficult to see my virtual hand in front of my virtual face.
