Why is DOL proposing to remove charcoal from Brazil from the EO List through the December 15, 2010 initial determination?

• After the July 2010 update to the List, DOL received recent, credible, and appropriately corroborated information from various sources on the use of forced or indentured child labor in charcoal production in Brazil. This information indicates that while children previously worked under forced labor conditions in charcoal production, the problem has been significantly reduced if not eliminated. In addition, the Government of Brazil appears to have established mechanisms to effectively address and respond to cases of forced child labor in charcoal production. Therefore, the Departments of Labor, State, and Homeland Security have preliminarily concluded that there is no longer a reasonable basis to believe that charcoal from Brazil is produced by forced or indentured child labor and therefore it should not continue to be on the List.
