Why Is Desertification Happening In Ghana?
It’s all to do with the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone), a weather front that causes rainfall largely. Scientists say that the ITCZ usually moves back and forth to the equator, meaning that northern Africa (where it lies at it’s most northerly point) doesn’t receive rainfall during certain times of the year, but when the ITCZ lies on it, there is plenty of rain to prevent desertification. Global warming or climate change stops this weather band from moving north, halting rainfall in places around Ghana, Togo and surrounding nations which causes desertification. Over-farming and mining plays a small part, but the ITCZ not being in the required position is the biggest killer of fertile land.
