Why is desalination needed?
Most of the water currently used comes from fresh groundwater supplies. Fresh groundwater alone will not be able to meet all future needs. Future groundwater withdrawals in the region will be limited to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable resource. Alternative water supplies, such as seawater desalination, brackish groundwater, surface water and reclaimed water must be developed to meet the public’s future drinking water needs. Seawater desalination is being investigated because it is a drought-proof alternative and because of the project participants’ proximity to the coast.
